CELLAR AND WINES
THE WINES OF TENUTA PONZIANI
SURPRISING ON THE SMELL, PLEASANT IN TASTE
The peculiarity of the soil on which the vines grow, a volcanic type rich in minerals called Venanzite, gives a characteristic singularity to the flavour and colour of the wine.
In 2010 an underground vinification cellar was built and covered in a typical stone of the area called tuff so as to ensure the wine is at an adequate temperature and protected from light. Its modern equipment houses the entire wine production of the vineyard and the entire wine manufacturing process – pressing, treatment of the must, fermentation and ageing – is carried out according to high quality standards and supervised by an expert oenologist, to produce excellent quality wines.
Clients can visit the cellar as well as participate in tastings to experience and get to know the secrets of this extraordinary work of art.
PONZIANI / VELIA
Velia, blend of Grechetto and Chardonnay
Ponziani Velia IGT Umbria, bears the name of an Etruscan noblewoman, Velia Spurinna, better known as Fanciulla Velca, a beautiful, rich, strong and much loved personality, which are the well-defined peculiarities that we find in this white wine.
In fact, its character has a clear fragrance that is free from approximations and is recognised by its fruity notes of melon, white peach, plum, apple, grapefruit and passion fruit, which then veers towards herbaceous tones, nuances of broom and mineral.
The drink, initially gradual, develops an irrepressible progression, marked by a perfect balance between alcohol and acidity and by an inexhaustible finish full of flavour and seductive mineral perceptions.
The white Ponziani Velia IGT wine was awarded one of the top 23 Wine Producers in Umbria (mentioned in the Guide to flavours and pleasures of the Region 2016 in Repubblica 4th Edition – December 14, 2015 – edited by Giuseppe Cerasa).
PONZIANI / VEITHA
Veitha, Chardonnay in purity
The important temperature ranges help with the success of this white wine from Monte Peglia which, together with the minerality of the soil, contribute to giving character to the nose and mouth from the Tenuta Ponziani.
The harvest takes place in the second ten days of September, with a selection of the bunches in the vineyard during the manual harvesting of the grapes. The must enters the cellar after a light pressing of the grapes in the press, where the berries remain in contact with the liquid for a short time, so as to extract aromas and flavours from the mother fruit. Alcoholic fermentation in steel follows, and after decantation, the wine is decanted into oak tonneau.
It will remain there until the following spring which is a relatively short period but it enriches the organoleptic complexity of this white wine, without affecting its tasting properties.
In the following summer it returns to steel, where it remains there to age until the following year, when it will be bottled.
A good vintage white wine, but also able to withstand a few years of ageing.
PONZIANI / FASTI
Fasti, blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon
Ponziani Fasti IGT Umbria, from the Etruscan meaning of a positive event and a glorious and profitable day, encloses the profitability and excellence of the fruits of the harvest in its name.
A Bardolese blend with a ruby robe, highlights an olfactory fresco that embraces notes of juniper, morello cherry, blackberry jam, tobacco, spices and rose petals, fused with hints of graphite and balsamic gusts, which anticipate a mouth characterised by a fleshy and ripe fruit, from a vivifying acidity and a dense tannic texture, which conveys the drink towards a prolonged and vibrant closure.
PONZIANI / NORTHIA
Northia, 100% Merlot and the highest oenological qualitative expression of the Ponziani winery
The vineyard located at 550 metres above sea level with south-east exposure due to a careful selection of the bunches and the low yields per hectare gives life to this red wine.
Merlot, an international vine now tested throughout Italy, acquires an unparalleled elegance in the vineyards of the Tenuta Ponziani with soils rich in minerals and the unique microclimate of the Umbrian territory.
The harvest takes place around mid-October, when the grapes have reached a slight overripeness, and only at this time, with the correct phenolic maturity, are the grapes placed in the cellar and after pressing and destemming do they go into alcoholic fermentation at a controlled temperature.
This is followed by the post-fermentation maceration of the grapes until the moment of racking; malolactic fermentation also takes place in steel and when finished, at the first racking, the wine is placed in the Tonneau where it remains for about 12 months. After bottling, it rests for a minimum of 3 months in the bottle where it can be preserved for a decade. In order to avoid it being drastically changed, Northia does not undergo filtration. It has an intense red colour with violet reflections, it is silky and full-bodied in the glass.
It has an intense red color with violet reflections, it is silky and full-bodied in the glass. The nose can sense, with a few rotations of the glass, the aromas that are dominated by black berried fruits, blueberry, blackberry, but also raspberries, vanilla, with a thin thread of cinnamon. It is elegant and warm with well-present but largely smooth tannins.
The persistence is more than long, with a harmonious finish and a pleasant well-integrated balsamic note.
